ABBEY ROAD 60s DRUMS provides astonishingly authentic sound as well as deep and detailed control. Everything you need to get the sound you want – from vintage to modern – is clearly laid-out in three control pages: Drums, Mixer, and Options. For that extra touch of realism, the parameters of volume, velocity, time, pitch, and EQ may be randomized. In addition, the ‘Exclude Direct Mics’ option allows the samples of the direct mics to be excluded from the randomization parameters. This lets you impart your drums tracks with subtle, nuances that avoid sounding automatically “randomized”.

On the Drum Page’s top panel you can individually adjust the tuning, volume envelope, and overhead and room microphone mixes for each drum. The kick drum has additional controls for adjusting the balance between microphones inside and outside the drum. Similarly, for the snare you can adjust the balance between the snare top and snare bottom microphones. The bottom panel lets you select articulations for the selected drum. For example, selecting the snare drum will give an articulation menu showing the different types of snare hits such as center, halfway, rimshot, flam, roll and others. Each articulation has its own volume envelope, with knobs for ‘Attack’, ‘Hold’, and ‘Decay’. One popular drum recording technique of the 1960s was to cover the snare and toms with tea towels, so samples of this technique are also included. In addition, each articulation can be assigned to a MIDI note, allowing you to fully customize your kit mapping. The Mixer Page is where you can control the levels of the various microphones. You’ll also find the panning, output routing and solo/mute controls here. On the left side are the direct microphone channels with the overhead and room microphones on the right. The buttons ‘Drums’ and ‘Percussion’ at the top right switch the direct mic controls from the regular drums (kick, snare, hi-hat and toms) to the percussion instruments (tambourine, claps and stick hits). The Options Page includes various parameters that let you fine tune the sound of Abbey Road 60s Drums and breathe life into your drum tracks. Not only can you make comprehensive adjustments to MIDI velocity curves and playing ranges you can also adjust the volume of the snare bottom microphone bleed – a common sound in acoustic drum recordings. Sometimes spelled khim, the instrument consists of a flat soundbox with 42 wire strings stretched across in 14 sets of 3. The courses are struck with two thin bamboo mallets with soft leather tips. The Kim is not a very loud instrument, and is typically played with a lot of tremolo. As there is no damping mechanism, the strings ring to their natural decay, and this gives an eerie resonance to the background of a Kim performance. The Kim is used in both solo and ensemble situations.

The Kim was sampled at 24 bit /44.1 and contains 137 seperate unlooped samples. Each note was sampled individually with up to 5 velocity layers, twice, to give an extremely natural, expressive response. This extremely unusual instrument can add an atmospheric edge to all kinds of production, from film scoring to ambient soundscaping to folk. KSP Tremolo Control Processor The KIM Kontakt 2 instrument comes with a dedicated KSP script that enables the signature tremolo sound of the Kim when key C1 is held down. Made with the mixer in mind, the sample disc contains many unique features not found in any other drum sample discs. First and foremost is the sound. Steven has sold drum samples to some of the country’s top mixers. His samples are big, fat, and punchy sounding. The samples have been thoroughly tweaked and tested in actual mixes within various musical styles. Where many drum sample discs are very raw and unprocessed, Steven Slate drum samples have been eq’d and compressed with precision so that you can put them in a mix and simply throw the fader up. Little to no tweaking is necessary, the work has been done, the sound is already there.

Another unique feature is Z system. Every single drum sample set is processed in one of four ambient spaces. For instance, Z1 mono sets are sampled so that there is slight amount of overhead micing creating a three dimensional, airy, punchy, natural drum tone. Z2 sets are stereo samples, and have heavily compressed far room mics mixed in with closer mics, and the result is a larger then life, deep and fat sound that has great dimension even in thick rock mixes. Z3 mono sets are very dry and are not processed with any ambient mics, creating a sound that is ultra punchy and “in your face”. These sets are great with most punk and speed metal mixing. The new Z4 sample sets are the isolated room sound of each sample. Mixing a Z1 with its Z4 sample will create an unbelievabley 3D drum tone that will have anyone believe your drums were recorded in a beautiful sounding drum room. On many sample CDs, a particular drum is sampled with one sound. However, any drummer knows that different sounds can be had from a drum by tuning the drum at certain tensions, by dampening and undampening the drum, by using different drum heads, or by tightening and loosing the snares. Steven Slate Drums makes use of all these wonderful sounds, and many of the drums are sampled with different tunings, different heads, and different dampenings. For instance, a pop rock song will probably require a low tuned, long decaying, non ringing snare drum sound. A hard rock tune might require a high tuned, quick decaying, open sounding snare drum with a touch of natural shell ring. As any pro audio engineer knows, running audio through various different gear can create subtle to obvious sonic differences. Some of the samples on Steven Slate Drums were processed through different eq’s and compressors, yielding a similar sound with a slightly different quality which may suit certain mixes better. For instance, by using a different compression chain, Steven could change the sound of the initial transient from ultra tight and punchy, to ultra splatty with more decay sound and body.
